On the 7th and 8th day of Xmas my longarmer gave to me .. the best advice - resource articles about polyester thread ...
https://www.superiorthreads.com/education/about-polyester-thread
So, I use Masterpiece to piece with - it is Superior Thread's 100% cotton thread - and is also Alex Anderson's thread line.
The reason I put the article above about Polyester Thread, is because Superior Threads sells a donut of SuperBob's - bobbins of their Bottom Line - 60 wt. Polyester Thread.
I am going to give 3 link's below .. one of this donut I was just talking about, and then 2 links to MasterPiece Bobbin Boxes - I just love all 3. They are my go to threads when I need to appliqué (either machine or hand), or when I need to sew binding on a quilt. Each bobbin lasts FOREVER! I can't tell you how many quilts I have bound with just a single bobbin - it seems like the Energizer Bunny - still going. You can also place these pre-wound bobbins in your sewing machine if you double check what size bobbin your machine takes - Class 15 or L.
Another reference guide for that is: https://www.prewoundbobbins.com
The 4th Link below will be to a spool of MasterPiece thread if you want to try it out, and the 5th link below is to a cone of MasterPiece thread if you want to try a larger quantity of it. MasterPiece is a 50 wt. 100% cotton thread. I picked out a light gray out for the spool, and a white cone, but there is 79 colors available. (You can also order directly from https://www.superiorthreads.com and receive free shipping for any orders over $50)
*The two tips I have quickly if you piece - both top and bottom - with polyester thread, is just watch the heat of your iron because polyester - COULD melt. Also, the first couple of stitches when first starting out, using a top and bottom polyester thread on a sewing machine could come out because polyester thread does not lock together as well initially as cotton starting out. But if I use the polyester for appliqué (I just use a locking stitch when I first start out on my domestic machine for appliqué) or binding thread and I haven't personally run into any problems yet.
I have the Red SuperBob's Donut ring at home - and they are L style bobbins - my machine takes Class 15 ... but I use these for hand stitching binding on, so I don't mind they are not the correct style to place directly in my machine. If I needed a color for appliqué, I normally put a neutral thread on my own plastic machine bobbin, and use the bobbin from the donut on the top of my machine and that way I am not "wasting" my colored thread on the bobbin work that you will never see. If I needed it for the bobbin as well, just wind a tiny bit from these bobbins onto one of your machine bobbins - and problem solved!
